a few words about us
Institute of Buildings and Health
This new Institute is the result of a collaboration between the National Aspergillosis Centre (NAC - an NHS specialist centre) and the Institute of Specialist Surveyors and Engineers (ISSE).
The NAC treats patients who suffer from respiratory infections and allergies caused by an air-borne fungus, Aspergillus. This fungus and its many close relatives thrive in damp conditions and is known to be present in homes that are damp. There is strong evidence of association between damp homes and ill health such as severe asthma, sinusitis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, eczema and more.
ISSE is a professional institute with a long history in treating damp buildings and a strong sense of purpose to improve professional standards of surveying and remediating damp homes together with other potential sources of ill health.
NAC & ISSE together hope to be able to improve living conditions nationwide by: 1. Introducing reliable standards for the detection and remediation of damp 2. Introduce reliable standards to identify unhealthy levels of microbial growth and other associated hazards 3. Promote multidisciplinary learning 4. Influence housing policy to ensure ventilation is given equal importance with insulation
